Jelena Dokic Speaks in Wodonga: From Victim to Thriver

Centre Against Violence (CAV) is proud to bring tennis legend, bestselling author, and survivor Jelena Dokic to Wodonga this November for an unforgettable evening of truth, resilience, and hope.

As part of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign, this powerful event invites the community to hear Jelena's story in her own words. From world-class athlete to survivor of long-term abuse, Jelena's journey challenges us all to listen more closely, to act with greater courage, and to believe in the possibility of change.

"We are so proud to be hosting Jelena Dokic here in Wodonga," said Acting CEO of CAV, Kasi Burge. "Her story is confronting, but necessary, because silence does not keep people safe. Listening to lived experience is one of the most powerful tools we have to drive real change. At CAV, we believe in community solutions, in truth-telling, and in hope. This event is about all of those values."

"The event is more than a speaking engagement. It is an invitation to the people of Wodonga to take part in a conversation that matters," added Kasi. "Abuse and violence are not issues that happen somewhere else, to other people. They exist in every postcode. And they continue when communities feel too unsure, too isolated, or too powerless to speak up. Jelena's story reminds us that abuse can hide in plain sight. It challenges us to ask what role each of us can play in creating a culture where violence is no longer tolerated, ignored, or excused."

CAV has a long-standing presence in the Wodonga region, supporting individuals and families impacted by family and sexual violence. Its work includes crisis response, therapeutic support, advocacy, group programs, and prevention education. The event with Jelena is a natural extension of this work, creating space for open conversation, reflection, and shared commitment to safety.

"We thank Wodonga Council for their support of this event and the work we do for the community," said Kasi. She thanked the council for their contribution, noting that it supports CAV's broader commitment to bringing powerful, community-led conversations to the region. "It is through local partnerships and shared values that we can keep building momentum toward safety, respect, and change."

Wodonga Council Mayor, Michael Gobel, said this event plays a powerful role in inspiring hope and resilience throughout our region. "Jelena Dokic's courageous story compels us to confront the reality of family and sexual violence and recognise the importance of fostering safe, compassionate communities. By coming together and encouraging open, honest conversations through events like this, we can break the silence, stand with survivors and work toward building a society free from harm," Mayor Gobel said.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that runs from 25 November to 10 December each year. It calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls in all their diversity. The 16 Days campaign brings together individuals, organisations, and communities to take action, raise awareness, and promote equality and respect.

CAV is also delighted to partner with Edgars Books and News, who will be on-site with copies of Jelena Dokic's books available for purchase. Book sales will be open before the event and continue afterward, with an opportunity to have your copy personally signed by Jelena after the show. We are grateful to Edgars for their enthusiastic support and for helping make this special part of the evening possible.

This event is expected to reach full capacity, and locals are encouraged to reserve tickets early. The evening will include a keynote presentation from Jelena, followed by a Q&A session. Books will be available for purchase on the night, thanks to Edgar's News and Books.

This event will also be held in Benalla on Tuesday 25 November and in Wangaratta on Wednesday 26 November, as part of Centre Against Violence's regional tour during the 16 Days of Activism. We are deeply grateful to Safe + Equal and Respect Victoria for their generous support, which has made it possible for us to bring this important event to communities across the region.
