Jobs and Housing delivered at Ngukurr

A remote community on the banks of the Roper River, which has been a building hub for the past six months, now features 13 new homes.

Dozens of jobs for Ngukurr locals were created during the construction which has brought the Territory Labor Governments remote housing building tally to 280 in just over two years. Nearly a thousand other homes have been extended and renovated.

Ngukurr tenants have already moved into six three-bedroom houses, a two-bedroom triplex and a two bedroom duplex while a three-bedroom duplex is nearly ready for occupation.

Building contractor, Asbuild teamed up with Ngukurrs Yugul Mangi Development Aboriginal Corporation which assisted by supplying construction labour as well as earthworks and concrete supplies.

A subdivision currently under construction sets the scene for more housing works. Site clearing and fencing works are complete and sewer works are underway on the 17-lot area.

As noted by Minister for Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy:

The Territory Labor Government is delivering on jobs and housing which are our key priorities.

Building new homes and extending and renovating existing homes mean better outcomes in health, education and employment which is why we have committed $1.1 billion to improving housing in remote communities right across the Territory.

As noted by Asbuild Project Manager Andrew Browett:

The Governments remote housing plan has made a big difference to the standard of living in Ngukurr. Residents have been very excited about moving into their new homes and the community is looking good.

The works have also made a huge difference to the Territory building industry and has allowed Ngukurr locals to have on-the-job training that will equip them for future employment.

As noted by Member for Arnhem Selena Uibo:

Ngukurr is one of the fastest growing remote towns in the NT and the Territory Labor Government is supporting this growth through our $1.1 billion remote housing investment program.

I am proud to be part of a government investing in remote housing, because it is investing in Territorians.
