Kate Piekutowski - Between Worlds

Manyung Gallery Group is thrilled to be hosting the first ever solo Melbourne show of emerging artist Kate Piekutowski’s on Thursday 10th of May 6 – 8 pm.

Kate produces intricate and involved multi layered etchings, which invoke a sense of nostalgia and memories of a ‘homeland’. This exhibition Between Worlds explores ideas around cultural identity, particularly her Polish heritage and the emotional journey of moving from Tasmania to Victoria, where these works where dually produced. This charming series really is Between Worlds.

Kate has a Masters degree from the University of Tasmania and has completed artist residencies in Portugal, Italy, Greece, New Zealand and most recently in India – Kate has some wonderful and inspiring stories to tell about the influence of travel and her passion for nostalgia.

"One, who has been consumed by it, will understand that nostalgia is a yearning for the past, a wistful desire to return to a former time or place. Through a sense of disconnection from my Polish heritage, I have become overwhelmed by the aura of nostalgia. My aim has been to explore how objects can act as vessels, connecting the present to the past, potentially connecting my contemporary life to my ancestry. By using the processes of layering and narrative I have explored this alternate world, with the hope of connecting with the past to engage with my cultural identity."

Exhibition runs until the 27th of May 2018
