Keeping Our Road Workers Safe

Tasmanian Government

Tasmanians are being presented with a stark reality today, as the new Our Speed is Your Safety Campaign was launched.

This year's theme focuses on reckless driving through roadworks.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said our road workers are out there building, upgrading and repairing our roads to make sure we can travel around our great state safely.

"Speeding unnecessarily endangers lives. You are better to be two minutes late than not arrive at all," Minister Vincent said.

"Every day, thousands of workers leave home for their worksites on roads throughout our state. Our roads are their office, and they deserve to be safe.

"They deserve to go to work each day and come home safely to their families every night."

Tasmania Police monitor roadwork sites across the State. In March, in just 45 minutes of monitoring road works in the state's north, police fined more than 20 speeding drivers.

"Unfortunately, monitoring of worksites around the State shows speed limits designed to keep workers and road users safe are often ignored," Minister Vincent said.

The Tasmanian Government has been backing in the Your Speed is Our Safety campaign since 2016.

"Tasmania has a $30 billion pipeline of infrastructure over the next decade. Roadworks will always be part of day-to-day life on our roads, and these workers deserve to feel safe while building our future," Minister Vincent said.

"It is shameful that workers also report abuse and threats from road users.

"I commend the Civil Contractors Federation and the Traffic Management Association of Australia for their ongoing efforts to get the message heard.

"My message is simple: don't be a goose around our road works or road workers."
