Whether you're the proud owner of a new EV, or an experienced hand at driving a fully-electric car, did you know there are a number of public kerbside chargers on Council land for community use?
As part of a partnership between Council, EVX Australia and Endeavour Energy, we've chargers mounted on existing power poles in Wollongong, Thirroul and Austinmer.
Drivers will need their own Type 2 charging cable to use them, and have downloaded the EVX's Driver's App to use and pay for the charge.
The power pole-mounted chargers are powered by 100 per cent renewable energy and are part of Council's commitment to support a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for the Wollongong community by 2050. We're also transitioning our Council fleet cars to electric and hybrid alternatives to reduce our operational footprint.
"It's a timely reminder for people to be aware of these chargers that are available in our community and complement the broader network of EV charging infrastructure that's across the city for people to use,'' Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"We know that one of the considerations, and potential barriers, for EV drivers is access to charging spaces when they're out and about. These five on-street locations are in locations that are convenient and accessible to EV drivers.''
The chargers are at:
- 14 George Street, Wollongong
- 12-22 Victoria Street, Wollongong
- Georges Place, Wollongong
- Railway Parade, Thirroul
- Austinmer Tennis Courts, Austinmer
There are also two public fast chargers on Council land at the Stewart Street East car park in Wollongong, which are also listed on plugshare.com .
"Right now, Council is also looking at more locations for chargers to be installed across the city to provide more opportunities for charging on the go,'' Cr Brown said.
"We have seven additional kerbside charging sites, as well as additional fast chargers being installed in the Bong Bong Street carpark in Dapto, which were approved last month by the Local Traffic Forum with the aim for these to be installed by the end of June. The majority of these sites are being supported by Round 2 of the NSW Government's Electric Vehicle kerbside charging grant.
"We're grateful for this funding as it supports more opportunities for drivers to tap into the city's wider network of public chargers. Especially with Wollongong being the fourth-fastest growing Local Government Area in NSW for overall EV uptake.''
