Kiama Municipal Council has successfully championed two important motions at the Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Annual Conference, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and community safety.

Mayor Cameron McDonald said the conference, which was held last week in Penrith, was a vital opportunity for Kiama to influence state-wide policy.

"The LGNSW conference is where councils come together to make real change. Kiama is proud to lead on issues that matter - like reducing plastic waste and improving safety for our community."

Deputy Mayor Melissa Matters added: "When councils unite, we can achieve meaningful outcomes. Seeing Kiama's motions adopted shows the power of collaboration."

Councillor Stuart Larkins, who attended the event alongside the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and CEO, said: "It's always a pleasure to attend the LGNSW conference on behalf of Kiama. Working together with councils across NSW ensures our priorities are heard."

Kiama's successful motions included:

  • Electoral reform to reduce election signage waste and ban single-use plastics (bunting) at polling booths.
  • Rock fishing safety reforms, responding to the tragic increase in fatalities along the NSW coast.

Cr Larkins also stood for election to the LGNSW Board as a regional/rural director.

"Irrespective of the election outcome, I'm proud to have stood and to see Kiama featured strongly and positively in the local government sector. I thank former LGNSW President Darriea Turley for her support and congratulate President-elect Darcy Byrne on his election to the presidency of the association."
