Tasmanian Labor
  • ICT underpins growing sectors in Tasmania's economy
  • Focus on education pathways to build employment needed
  • IAC representatives and Labor work together for ICT growth
  • Labor has united with industry leaders in the Information and Communication Technologies sector for its third Industry Advisory Council meeting.

The contribution from IAC members is informing Labor's policy development and providing valuable insights into how to address key issues facing the ICT sector in Tasmania.

Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Jobs and ICT, Michelle O'Byrne, said the industry led IAC – chaired by Joel Harris of The Project Lab – identified education as a fundamental challenge for the sector moving forward.

"Representatives feel there is a need for change to ensure innovation, entrepreneurship and ICT skills investments are made into private and public learning programs across the state" Ms O'Byrne said.

"Labor knows that ICT underpins every growing sector in Tasmania's economy, and there is huge potential for strengthening education pathways to help create jobs - however this is currently going untapped under the Hodgman Government.

"There is room for more growth with the right backing from Government.

"It is critical that Tasmanians receive relevant first class education and training to strengthen the capabilities of our vibrant Tasmanian ICT workforce and our education investments also continue to produce local entrepreneurs that capitalises on the opportunities arising from the digital economy.

"Tasmanians deserve relevant ICT education that provides skills relevant to future employment and entrepreneurship thinking to drive our local start-up economy.

"Labor is committed to working with educators, industry, and the community to identify policies to support the growth of Tasmania's ICT sector."

    Michelle O'Byrne MP
