Labor Set To Impose New Suburb-based Taxes

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government is preparing to impose up to five new taxes to fund the $34.5 billion Suburban Rail Loop, targeting certain suburbs and paving the way for a new tax regime based on where you live.

The proposed taxes reportedly include:

  • A new tax on homes near SRL stations.
  • An infrastructure contribution tax.
  • A new tax on developments near SRL stations.
  • A windfall gains tax.
  • A tax on public and private off-street parking near SRL stations, expanding the current CBD congestion levy across Melbourne.

Even the government has admitted the chaos and poor design of its tax plans, with one source likening the approach to "a Monopoly board where they're making it up as they go".

Victorians already pay the price of Labor's 63 new or increased taxes, making Victoria the most taxed state in the nation.

Shadow Treasurer, James Newbury, said: "Not content with drowning Victorians in tax, Jacinta Allan is plotting to impose almost half a dozen new taxes."

"We also know that once State Labor starts targeting certain communities to pay tax, it won't be long before Premier Allan assaults other suburbs with individual taxes.

"Labor has also wanted to impose taxes based on your geographic characteristics and their new agenda will target you based on where you live.

"Labor can't manage money, can't manage major projects and Victorians are paying the price."
