Labor Will Lock Up Tarkine

  • Mal Hingston Candidate for Braddon
  • Labor will lock up the Tarkine if re-elected, Liberal candidate for Braddon Mal Hingston, said today.

Mr Hingston's comments follow Labor refusing to rule out* locking up the Tarkine, in response to a Green campaign pledge yesterday.

"Yesterday, Labor refused to rule out locking up the Tarkine, because they are captive to the Greens," Mr Hingston said.

"This follows comments earlier in the campaign from Labor's candidate for Bass, Jess "Treesdale", where she revealed that she wants to end native forestry in Tasmania.

"Labor are weak on forestry, soft on salmon and are now rolling over on the Tarkine."

Mr Hingston said that only the Liberals could be trusted to stand up for Tasmanian jobs.

"If Labor want to lock up the Tarkine they'll have to get through me first," Mr Hingston said.

"I will never, ever sell-out our forestry, our mining, our salmon and everything in between for mainland Green votes."

*"A Labor government spokeswoman did not directly respond when asked if Labor would support the designation of Takanya as World Heritage and instead pointed to a range of measures and investments to "undo the damage done" after a "decade of environmental vandalism by the Liberals and Nationals." - The Mercury, 2 May
