Lake Illawarra detectives have charged two men over their alleged involvement in the manufacturing and supply of 'slam guns' in the state's south.
In April 2025 detectives attached to Lake Illawarra Police District commenced Strike Force Alvie to investigate the manufacture and supply of firearms made from adapted materials known as 'slam guns'.
During the investigation, strike force detectives identified that these privately manufactured firearms had been sold several times through the Illawarra.
Police located and seized all these firearms as part of the investigation, including a triple-barrel firearm capable of firing a 12-gauge shotgun shell.
Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives – with assistance from Tactical Operations Unit officers – arrested a 31-year-old man in Albion Park, and a 52-year-old man in Albion Park Rail, yesterday (Wednesday 3 September 2025).
Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The 31-year-old was charged with 12 offences:
- Unlawfully sell firearms 3 times or more within 12 months
- Supply prohibited firearm to unauthorised person (four counts)
- Manufacture prohibited firearm without licence/permit (four counts)
- Manufacture prohibited weapon without licence/permit
- Sell prohibited weapon to person without permit, and
- Intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.
The 52-year-old man was charged with manufacture prohibited firearm without licence/permit, and intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.
They were both refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 3 today (Thursday 4 September 2025).
