Lapping it up to raise funds for MS

On Sunday, May 7 eight Queensland Police officers will take part in a Swimathon in Townsville to help raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

The MS Swimathon will commence at 6am and officers will take part in a 12-hour relay, trying to complete as many laps as possible until 6pm that night.

The officers Janelle Poole; Julie Cooke; Joan Millett; Natalie Flanders; Tanya Bell; Michelle Harris; Cherie Banks; and Bernadette Radford, are joining their team of 17 to help raise funds for this worthy cause.

In Australia, over 23,000 people are living with MS. It is an illness that is found in both males and females, however it is three times more likely to affect women.

The symptoms of MS are varied and unpredictable but can include tiredness; blurred vision; loss of balance and muscle coordination; slurred speech; difficulty walking; and short-term memory loss.

Multiple Sclerosis is a lifelong disease, which has no cure. It is most often diagnosed in people aged in their twenties and thirties, with the average age of diagnosis being only 30.

The Queensland based fundraising initiative aims to help raise money for MS Queensland, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to help maintain the independence and dignity of people living with MS through support that includes residential facilities; social support programs; attendant care in private homes; and regional and country link programs.

Police Health have been generous enough to donate $200 and a number of items for the team including twenty water bottles, twenty eskies, and protein bars to help support the team.

Our thoughts will be with Fiona Ward when we are swimming next Sunday.
