Learner motorcyclist detected travelling 52kmh over speed limit

A 23 year old learner motorcyclist has had his motorcycle seized after being detected travelling at 52kmh over the speed limit.

Police detected and intercepted a 23-year-old male novice learner motorcycle rider travelling at 132km/hr in a 100km/hr zone near Avoca on the Esk Main Road about 12.45pm today. The rider of the motorcycle also provided a positive roadside test for illicit drugs.

Tasmanian novice learner riders are only permitted to ride at a maximum speed of 80km/hr.

Given the excessive speed and rider's previous traffic history the motorcycle was seized for a duration of 3 months. The man has been summoned to appear in court.

Tasmania Police will be continuing to target high risk road behaviours to reduce serious and fatal crashes.

"We are committed to engaging and working with the community to provide effective and efficient policing services and urge all driver's and riders to adhere to the posted speed limits and drive to the conditions," Acting Inspector Matthew Shea said.
