Liberal's short-sighted plan won't fix traffic issues

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government plan to replace a two-lane bridge with a two-lane bridge
  • Any new bridge must be future proofed
  • Lack of vision by the Government
  • The Liberal Government's announcement of a new two-lane bridge to replace the current two-lane Cam River Bridge is incredibly short sighted.

Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Shane Broad said the Government's new plan does not go far enough to ensure the bridge can fix the 'Cooee Crawl' traffic issues.

"This plan is incredibly short-sighted," Dr Broad said.

"The Government plan to fix traffic issues by replacing a two-lane bridge with a new two-lane bridge, this simply won't change anything.

"This crossing should get a four-lane bridge, whether it is through a new four-lane bridge or a new two-lane bridge alongside the current structure.

"Any bridge built will be in place for decades, and if the Government can build the bridge in a way to accommodate future sea level rises then why can't they accommodate current and future traffic needs?

"This plan shows a complete lack of vision from a government that already has a horrendous record on infrastructure.

"There are 64 major projects throughout Tasmania that are significantly delayed, some by up to five years.

"The Government needs to start thinking about the future of Tasmania before it arrives."

    Shane Broad MP

    Shadow Minister for Infrastructure
