Light Aircraft Crash at Burnie/Wynyard Airport

Around 4pm today emergency services were called to the Burnie Airport regarding a light aircraft crash.

A recreational aircraft being piloted by a 77-year-old man who is an experienced pilot, was attempting to land, when the aircraft appears to have been hit by a cross wind which has contributed to the aircraft crashing upon landing.

The pilot has managed to contact airport staff, who contacted emergency services, before extricating himself from the aircraft.

The pilot was taken to the North West Regional Hospital due to lower back soreness.

There were no passengers on the aircraft.

There is significant damage to the wing and undercarriage.

The crash will be investigated by Recreational Aviation Australia. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to please contact Wynyard Police Station on 131 444 or 6477 7267.
