Liverpool City Council is mourning the loss of former Councillor Ali Karnib, a dedicated public servant whose leadership, generosity, and commitment to the community spanned more than 20 years. First elected in 1999, Ali Karnib served the people of Liverpool until 2024, including three terms as Deputy Mayor. A former teacher who settled in Liverpool in 1984, Ali was a strong advocate for equity, education, and community harmony. He also served as President of the Lebanese Community Council, playing a pivotal role in promoting multiculturalism and community connection. Mayor Ned Mannoun paid tribute to his former colleague. "Ali Karnib was a man of deep integrity, compassion and conviction," Mayor Mannoun said. "He believed in serving the people of Liverpool with humility and purpose, and he leaves behind a legacy of service that will not be forgotten." Ali served on numerous Council committees including the Civic Advisory Committee, Audit, Risk & Improvement Committee, Budget Review Panel, and Community Safety & Crime Prevention Committee, among many others. His contribution touched almost every area of Council's work – from planning and economic development to youth engagement and community wellbeing. "Ali's impact on our city cannot be overstated," Mayor Mannoun said. "He brought people together, championed our diverse communities, and always put others before himself. Liverpool is a stronger, more inclusive city because of Ali's leadership." "On a personal level, I valued Ali's wisdom and kindness. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all. His presence will be deeply missed across Council and the wider community." Ali's legacy lives on through his son, Councillor Sam Karnib, who currently serves on Liverpool City Council. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sam and the entire Karnib family. They have not only lost a father and patriarch – Liverpool has lost one of its great champions," Mayor Mannoun said. "Ali's life was defined by service, and his memory will live on in the city he helped shape." "Council looks forward to unveiling the new brand through an exciting calendar of events and programs in 2025 and beyond," Mayor Mannoun said. |
