Local youth cook up exciting new show at Griffith Regional Theatre

History and art, past and future, combine in We Have a Stove - a series of short plays presented by the Senior Youth Theatre Troupe at Griffith Regional Theatre on Tuesday 24 September 2019.

The Theatre's Senior Youth Theatre Troupe is a group of talented, enthusiastic young actors, aged 12-18 years, who have been developing their performance and production skills since 2017.

The Troupe presented its first impressive showcase performance, featuring original new material from the region, last year.

This year the Troupe has delved even deeper into their roots for the annual showcase, working with Director and Pioneer Park Museum Curator Bonnie Owen, to present snapshots from the region's history.

We Have a Stove is presented as a series of eight memories, inspired by the early people, places, events, struggles, and triumphs of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Some words, stories, and names you'll hear are true, immortalised on the stage.

Manager of Griffith Regional Theatre, Raina Savage, said, "This has been a great opportunity to collaborate across our cultural facilities."

"Through this series of short plays and vignettes, the young actors bring to life letters and historic documents from the Museum's collection, giving us a glimpse into the everyday lives of the early settlers." Ms Savage said.

Director Bonnie Owen said, "It has been marvellous to see the young people of today becoming the young people of the past. While the lives of yesterday's young people seem a world away, we have learnt that, in some ways, some things haven't changed."

"This has been a wonderful opportunity to unite our local youth with their history - on stage. We have much to learn from the dedication, hard work, bravery and ingenuity of our region's pioneers. Griffith Youth Theatre Troupe have certainly displayed these values through their commitment to We Have a Stove," Ms Owen said.

We Have a Stove is at Griffith Regional Theatre on Tuesday, 24September 2019 at 7.30pm.
