Local youths attend 'Cooling Down' PCYC program in Riverina

Teenagers from the Riverina joined police and emergency services workers today at a ‘Cooling Down’ PCYC youth program in Batlow, NSW Police say.

About 11am (Tuesday 3 July 2018), officers from the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Wagga Wagga, Riverina Police District, Rural Fire Service, NSW Ambulance and the Batlow Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA), re-enacted the aftermath of a serious vehicle crash for several teenagers.

The ‘Cooling Down’ program is a local PCYC initiative targeting at risk youth and is focussed on reducing the associated risks surrounding car theft.

The young people were shown rescue equipment and given a practical demonstration to illustrate the risks of reckless driving behaviour and associated road trauma.

Inspector Stephen Radford of Tumut Police said the young people were genuinely surprised while watching the graphic demonstration.

"We are grateful to have the support and assistance of the PCYC, Department of Education and those emergency services workers and volunteers who gave up their time today to cut "people" out of a crashed vehicle.

"By looking outside the square, we hope that demonstrations like this will build rapport and assist them to make positive choices in their lives and realise their actions may have serious consequences to others around them." Insp Radford said.
