Logan City Council will consider the scope of a further investigation into ephemeral (dry) creeks this month as it continues to respond to community feedback about flood mapping.
Council's City Shape, Economic Transformation and Transport Committee will discuss the report on August 12 and make recommendations to the August 19 Ordinary Council meeting.
Mayor Jon Raven said a Special Council meeting in June resolved to further investigate ephemeral creeks, as part of broader flood mapping considerations in the draft Logan Plan.
"We've listened to community feedback about minor rural gullies, farm dams and other shallow waterways being included in flood risk mapping, which is why Council resolved in June to do more work on these parts of the flood maps." Mayor Raven said.
"We want to use this investigation to make sure we're using a common-sense approach for how creeks are defined and when flooding should be identified and managed for land use planning. This work will let us find a better way to do future creek flood studies and provide greater certainty for the community."
If Council endorses the scope on August 19, specialist expertise will be engaged to investigate the assumptions, methodology and application of creek flood mapping and associated planning policy.
The investigation would consider a more detailed technical assessment of the waterway function and characteristics to further distinguish creek systems from overland flow paths.
The findings of the investigation will be presented to Council for consideration before any decisions are made. Any future amendments to creek flood mapping would consider flood risk management for people and property.
The Committee and Council meetings will be open to the public and available to watch on Council's YouTube channel.
