A man from Maidstone guilty of perverting the course of justice has been sentenced to an immediate prison term following referral to the Court of Appeal by the Solicitor General Alex Chalk, QC MP.
On 17 June 2017, Wayne Slough, now 33, intentionally acted to pervert the course of justice when he gave a statement to the police falsely accusing his wife of stabbing him.
On 10 November 2021, Slough was sentenced to two years' imprisonment suspended for two years at Maidstone Crown Court. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
Following the sentencing, the Solicitor General referred Slough's sentence to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme.
On 19 January the Court of Appeal found his original sentence to be unduly lenient and increased it to 3 years' imprisonment.
Speaking after the hearing, the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP said:
Slough lied to the police in a shameful and dishonest attempt to see his wife punished for a crime she did not commit. Perverting the course of justice is a very serious offence and I hope the Court's decision will act as a deterrent to those who might contemplate such deceitful behaviour.
