The Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) Members Committee is boosting funds back into the local art community by announcing a bursary that will provide financial support to artists.

Developed in response to the challenges brought about and experienced by artists in 2020, the MRAG Members Committee is offering direct funding for two prospective visual artists who live within a 100km radius of the Maitland local government area and one artist collective operating within the local government area.

The opportunity is an initiative of the MRAG Members Committee whose support will provide the initial offer of the bursary of $5,000 for each visual artist, and $3,000 for the collective.

This bursary is for the express purpose of supporting artists. No presentation outcomes are expected, however, successful applicants may be invited to engage in promotional opportunities presented by the Gallery.

MRAG Members Committee Chair Sui-Linn White says, 'The MRAG Members Committee is pleased to encourage and support local artists with this bursary. We trust it will help artists purchase and utilise new equipment, upgrades, refurbishments, materials, research or promotional initiatives. We hope this will allow them to continue their practice to their full potential.'

Gallery Director Gerry Bobsien says, 'The Gallery continues to advocate for the important contribution of artists in our community. This is a timely and welcome initiative.'
