Major intersection upgrade to support 30 local jobs

Townsville City Council has awarded a $3.5 million contract to upgrade the Ingham Road and Enterprise St intersection.

BMD Constructions has been awarded the contract and the upgrade is expected to support 30 local jobs over the life of the project.

The project includes new turning lanes, raised concrete medians, widening the carriageway, drainage improvements and upgraded pavement.

About 13,000 vehicles use Ingham Road every day, with 25 per cent of the traffic coming from commercial vehicles.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council was committed to upgrading the city's road network to improve safety and traffic flow.

"This crucial upgrade will allow safer access to and from Enterprise Street, particularly for heavy vehicles," Cr Hill said.

"These intersection upgrades keep our city moving and create dozens of local jobs."

Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said the project was the third upgrade to intersections along Ingham Road in recent years.

"Council understands how important Ingham Road is for motorists and truckies," Cr Molachino said.

"Importantly, these upgrade will work together to improve safety on one of the city's busiest roads."

The project received $3 million in funding from the Australian Government's Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
