Major support for Tasmanian grassroots sporting clubs

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Rockliff Liberal Government is supporting our grassroots sport and recreation sector to ensure it continues providing safe, fair and inclusive opportunities for all Tasmanians.

34 sporting clubs and organisations across the State will share in a total of $1.1 million as part of the 2022-23 Sport and Recreation State Grants Program.

Under the Program, grants of up to $60,000 are available to assist state sporting organisations, state disability sporting organisations, and recreation providers to provide increased sport and recreation programs.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street said the funding would provide a major boost to grassroots sport and recreation in Tasmania.

"Enabling increased grassroots participation is at the centre of our Government's sport and recreation strategy. This program will allow our tremendous sport and recreation providers to grow their capacity and deliver programs in everything from equestrian, to surf lifesaving, and gymnastics," Minister Street said.

Ten Pin Bowling Tasmania President, Garry Crick says they will be using the funding to run participation programs to try and get more young Tasmanians active and into the sport.

"This funding is vital in helping Tasmanians enjoy tenpin bowling. Learning to bowl with Bowl Patrol (children) or Bowl Abilities (adults) teaches the basics of tenpin bowling and whether you're looking to get off the couch, aspire to represent Australia or are looking for a fun, family entertainment options, tenpin bowling is for everybody," Mr Crick said.

New Horizons CEO, Belinda Kitto said the funding would greatly enhance their ability to deliver inclusive programs for Tasmanians with a disability.

"This vital state funding means that New Horizons Tasmania can extend the outcomes of delivering inclusive programs, by helping to build the capacity of community clubs to be accessible and welcoming to people with disability," Ms Kitto said.

"The funding also helps us to provide representative pathways for elite Tasmanian athletes with disability."

The Rockliff Liberal Government will continue to deliver targeted support programs that allow all Tasmanians to pursue their favourite sport or activity.
