Malicious damage to movie cinemas, man charged in Warrawong

Police have charged a man after he allegedly caused significant damage to the cinema complex at Warrawong last night, NSW Police say.

About 7.40pm today, a 46-year-old man entered the complex on King Street and after loitering in the foyer for sometime he was seen to enter the uni-sex toilet cubicle in the bathroom area.

It’s alleged he held a lighter to the sprinkler system located on the ceiling of the cubicle which has activated the fire alarm and caused a large amount of water to be released.

The uni-sex cubicle was flooded with water which has then travelled from the bathroom area out into the main foyer and onto the carpet.

A number of movie-goers were evacuated while the system was shut off and cleaned up.

Police were called and officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command arrested the man.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with destroy or damage property > $15 000 and enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse.

He was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court tomorrow.
