Man arrested after assaulting police officer in Nowra

A man has been arrested after he allegedly punched the window of a police car and assaulted a police officer in Nowra today, NSW Police say.

About 12.20pm today, an officer from Shoalhaven Traffic & Highway Patrol Command was patrolling Kinghorne Street when he saw a man standing in the middle of the street.

The man allegedly approached the police car and began punching the driver’s window several times.

When the officer attempted to get out of the police car, the man allegedly reached in and grabbed the male Senior Constable around the neck.

Several members of the public came to the officer’s assistance before other police arrived and arrested the man.

A 40-year-old man was taken to Nowra Police Station where he is currently assisting police with inquiries.

Charges are expected to be laid in relation to the incident.

The Senior Constable was not seriously injured and was able to resume his duties.

Shoalhaven Local Area Command Duty Officer, Chief Inspector Steven Johnson said the incident highlights some of the dangers police officers can face doing their duties each day.

"It was very lucky that the police officer was not seriously injured and I would just like to thank those members of the public who came to the Senior Constable’s assistance today." said Ch Insp Johnson.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stopers.
