Man arrested after setting another man on fire in Wollongong

Police have arrested a man following a serious assault in Mangerton overnight. , NSW Police say

Emergency services were called to Myuna Way, Mangerton about 9pm today, following reports that a man was suffering serious burns.

Initial investigation suggests that a man allegedly set his two dogs upon a man and woman as they walked near his unit.

As the pair attempted to leave the area, they were confronted by the man, who allegedly doused the male victim in a flammable substance and set him alight.

The woman was burnt attempting to help the man who was on fire.

Officers from Wollongong Local Area Command attended and located the 45-year-old man and 44-year-old woman suffering serious burns.

Both were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital were the man remains in a critical condition and the woman remains in a stable condition.

Officers from Wollongong Local Area Command launched an investigation into the incident and about 10.30pm, they arrested a 41-year-old man at a unit on Myuna Way, Mangerton.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
