Man arrested after woman found dead in Wollongong home

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in the Illawarra last night, NSW Police said.

About 7.30pm Saturday, police and emergency services were called to a home unit on Corrimal Street, Wollongong, following reports a woman had died.

A 36-year-old woman was treated by Ambulance Paramedics, but could not be revived.

Police from Wollongong Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He has been refused bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court later today (Sunday).

An investigation is now underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as suspicious.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine cause of death.

A report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.
