Man arrested and charged following wheelchair theft at Federation Square

Police have arrested a man following the alleged theft of a wheelchair in Melbourne yesterday (2 December), Victoria Police say.

Police have been told an unknown man struck up a conversation with a 54-year-old man, who uses a wheelchair, at Flinders Street railway station about 11am.

The pair then attended a toilet on Birrarung Marr and the offender assisted the man to the toilet before allegedly stealing his electric wheelchair.

The wheelchair was located at the corner of Wellington Parade and Jolimont Road in East Melbourne last night.

A 39-year-old Seddon man was arrested by police this afternoon and has been charged with theft.

He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 25 March 2019.
