Man arrested following 17-hour stand-off with police at Newcastle, NSW

A man has been arrested after a stand-off with police in the state’s Hunter region.

Just before midday today, police responded to reports of a stolen vehicle parked on Henry Street, Tighes Hill.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command attended and located a man on the roof of a nearby apartment complex.

Officers formed a perimeter around the building and tactical officers from the State Protection Support Unit (SPSU) and police negotiators attended a short time later, and attempted to initiate negotiations with the man.

About 4.45am tomorrow, the 27-year-old man was taken into custody.

He was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Newcastle Police Station.

Detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad’s Strike Force Fleet are expected to speak with the man as they believe he may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Strike Force Fleet was established to investigate a triple stabbing at a gym at Brookvale, as well as two armed robberies at service stations at Shortland and Sandgate and two police pursuits this week.

Investigations are continuing.
