Man arrested in bushland following pursuit, NSW

A man is under police guard in hospital following a pursuit in the Hunter Valley overnight, NSW Police say.

About 9.15pm today, officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command were patrolling High Street, Maitland, when they observed a Holden Commodore with Victorian numberplates allegedly travelling above the speed limit.

A pursuit was commenced when the driver failed to stop for police and continued onto the New England Highway towards Buchannan, where the Holden had a minor collision with a stationary Subaru Outback wagon waiting at a roundabout.

The driver ran from the scene and was arrested in bushland about two kilometres away with the assistance of the dog unit.

He was taken to Maitland Hospital under police guard is expected to be charged with several offences once released from hospital.
