Man arrested over carjacking and police pursuit near Newcastle, NSW

A man has been arrested following an alleged carjacking and police pursuit in the Newcastle region today, NSW Police say.

Just after 10am (Thursday 21 December 2017), police will allege a 22-year-old man was driving dangerously in a stolen vehicle at Wallsend.

A police pursuit was initiated westbound on the Hunter Expressway but was terminated due to safety reasons shortly after.

Officers later spotted the man on the same motorway, travelling eastbound at Minmi and another pursuit was initiated.

Police deployed road spikes but the man drove away and the pursuit was again terminated.

After forcing another car off the road, the man stole a silver Audi while armed and fled on the M1 Pacific Motorway.

The man also tried to steal three different cars at Dora Creek, but was unsuccessful.

He then crashed into an unmarked police car, injuring two officers.

The 22-year-old man was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are urging anyone with dash cam footage of the incident and any witnesses in Dora Creek to contact Lake Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers.
