Man charged after attempted robbery and assault of police officer, NSW

A man will face court after an attempted robbery and allegedly assaulting a police officer yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 5.30pm on Sunday 29 January 2017, police were notified of a man who entered a supermarket on Ash Avenue armed with a baseball bat.

He approached a female staff member and allegedly assaulted her with the baseball bat before demanding money.

Another staff member and customer saw the attack and restrained the man until police arrived.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command attended and arrested a 43-year-old man.

A 57-year-old woman was taken to Wollongong Hospital and is currently in Intensive Care suffering serious head injuries.

The male was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

A short time later, whilst being escorted to his cell, the 43 year old male assaulted a police officer.

The officer was taken to Shellharbour Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The 43-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault with intent to rob, assault police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm and several traffic offences.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow.
