Man charged after attempted robbery of $94,000 of gold, inquiries continue in Chatswood

A man has been charged after the alleged assault and attempted robbery of another man carrying $94,000 worth of gold on Sydney’s north shore earlier this month, NSW Police say.

About 1.45pm on Sunday 6 November 2016, a 50-year-old man was driving a vehicle on Thomas Street, Chatswood, when he stopped for his female passenger to exit the vehicle.

Police will allege as the woman got out of the car, the driver was struck on the head by a 46-year-old man, who grabbed a bag of gold and mobile phone from inside the vehicle and fled.

The driver followed the younger man and the pair allegedly became involved in a physical altercation.

The older man managed to secure the bag of gold, before the 46-year-old man ran away.

Officers attached to North Shore Local Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, about 11am today, detectives attended a unit block on Francis Street, Dee Why, and arrested a 46-year-old man.

He was taken to Manly Police Station and charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

The man was refused bail to appear at Manly Local Court tomorrow.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
