A man will face court today after a police officer was allegedly assaulted in the state's north yesterday.
Police will allege about 4.20pm yesterday (Monday 23 March 2026), an off-duty police officer was in a grocery store on Balo Street, Moree, when he observed a man stealing items from the store.
The off-duty sergeant identified himself to the man and instructed him to return the items, however; the man did not comply.
Following a short foot pursuit, the man allegedly pushed the officer into a glass cabinet, causing lacerations to the officer's arms and back.
Police will allege the man repeatedly pushed the officer into the shattered glass before another short foot pursuit ensued, and the man ran from the scene.
The officer was taken to Moree Hospital by NSW Ambulance for treatment and was later released.
About 4.50pm the same day, officers attached to New England Police District attended a home on Auburn Street, Moree, where they allegedly located a 38-year-old man hiding in the laundry.
He was arrested and taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to police officer on duty reckless as to actual bodily harm, wound police officer executing duty reckless as to actual bodily harm, contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic) and shoplifting.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 5 today (Tuesday 24 March 2026).
