Man charged after pigeons die in fire in Rosebery

Police have arrested and charged a man after a bird coop containing pigeons was set alight at Rosebery today, resulting in the deaths of 12 of the birds, NSW Police say.

Just after 7am (Wednesday 27 December), a resident of Harris Street, Rosebery, was woken by a neighbour who told him his bird coop was alight.

Fire & Rescue NSW attended and the fire was extinguished, with 12 of the 37 pigeons inside found dead.

Police were contacted and arrested a 33-year-old man nearby.

A crime scene warrant was executed at a nearby premises where police located a barbecue lighter, Oxycontin and an amount of cannabis.

The man was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with commit an aggravated act of aggravated cruelty upon animals, damage property by fire, intimidation, possess prohibited drug and possess prescribed restricted substance.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 28 December 2017).
