Man charged after traffic crash in Newtown, QLD

Police have charged a man in relation to a traffic crash involving a police car in Newtown yesterday, Queensland Police say.

It is alleged a man drove a Holden Commodore station wagon directly into the path of a police car on Holberton Street around 3.30pm.

The man then fled the scene and allegedly attempted to enter a passing vehicle at the intersection of Clearview Street. The man was apprehended and taken into custody.

The 41-year-old passenger of the Commodore sustained injuries to his head and upper body and was taken to hospital.

The two police officers were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and were released last night.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

A 33-year-old Drayton man has been charged with multiple offences including two counts of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, attempting to enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence and driving a motor vehicle while disqualified.

He is due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.

Investigator are appealing for people who were in Holberton Street at the time of the incident to contact police.
