Man charged following carjacking in Newcastle

A man will face court after an alleged carjacking in Newcastle last month, NSW Police say.

About 1.30pm on Saturday 24 March 2018, a 19-year-old man was walking to his vehicle, a red Mazda 3 hatchback, which was parked in a university carpark.

As the teenager opened the car door, he was allegedly threatened with a firearm by another man, who then fled the area in the Mazda.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were notified of the incident and launched an investigation into the circumstances.

Police conducted a canvass of the area and reviewed CCTV images.

Following extensive inquires, detectives attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrested a 26-year-old man on Greenhills Avenue, Woodberry, about 8.40am today (Tuesday 17 April 2018).

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with an outstanding warrant, aggravated assault with intent to take motor vehicle, larceny, give false name, receive/dispose of stolen property and damage property by fire.

The man was refused bail and will appear at Maitland Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 18 April 2018).
