Man charged following home invasion in South Grafton

A man has been charged following an alleged home invasion in South Grafton over the weekend, NSW Police say.

About 7.20pm on Saturday (9 July 2016), emergency services were called to a home on Margaret Crescent, following reports of an altercation.

Police have been told that a man attended the home, armed with a knife and a chain, threatened the occupants, and attempted to force entry.

One of the occupants of the home, a 64-year-old man, allegedly armed himself with a firearm and confronted the man, before discharging a shot into the ground.

The firearm was seized, and will undergo forensic examinations. Investigations into the incident are continuing.

The 43-year-old man was arrested at the scene and treated by Ambulance Paramedics for minor injuries, before being taken to Grafton Base Hospital under police guard. The injuries are not related to the discharge of the firearm.

At the hospital, he allegedly assaulted an officer performing guard duties.

He was later taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with a number of offences including; aggravated break and enter with intent to commit serious indictable offence, use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence (x2), and assault police.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Grafton Local Court today.
