Man charged following pursuit, critical incident investigation continues in Fairfield

A man has been charged following a pursuit with police and crash in Fairfield last week, as a critical incident investigation continues, NSW Police say.

Shortly before 3pm on Thursday 8 November 2018, a police vehicle attached to Liverpool Police Area Command attempted to stop a Mitsubishi sedan on Elizabeth Street at Liverpool.

When the vehicle stopped in traffic, officers approached before it sped away striking one officer’s hand.

The Mitsubishi was eventually spotted at Fairfield West by a vehicle from the Traffic Highway Patrol Command and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

POLAIR followed the vehicle and at the intersection of Smithfield Road and King Road the Mitsubishi was involved in a collision with a garbage truck.

Police attended and arrested a 26-year-old man who was driving the Mitsubishi. He was conveyed to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.

Following his release from hospital on Friday 9 November 2018, the man was taken to Liverpool Police Station and charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous - second offence, and use etc offensive weapon to prevent police investigation.

He appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday 10 November 2018 where he was formally refused bail. He will next appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday 9 January 2018.

The critical incident investigation continues. That investigation will be subject to independent review.
