A Sydney man who allegedly tried to borrow bolt cutters from Sydney Airport staff to rob a charity donation bin in the arrival concourse is expected to face Downing Centre Local Court today (10 September, 2025).
The man, 54, came to the AFP's attention on 15 August, 2025, following a report of an individual trying to break into a donation bin at the arrival concourse.
It's alleged the man attempted to use bolter cutters to cut through a padlock securing a charity donation bin, believed to contain between $1000 to $7000.
When unsuccessful, he allegedly approached an airline employee, purporting to be from the charity, and asked for a larger set of bolt cutters.
AFP officers located the man and searched a suitcase in his possession, which allegedly contained a set of tools, including bolt cutters.
He was issued a court attendance notice to face a charge of being armed with intent to commit indictable offence, contrary to section 114 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW).
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment.
AFP Acting Sergeant Tim Skrypnikov said the AFP was committed to preventing and responding to crime at major Australian airports.
"Any criminal activity in the aviation environment, however big or small, will not be tolerated, including theft.
"If you commit criminal activity in airports, we have the resources to find, apprehend, and put you before the courts."
