Man charged for stealing from vehicles in Newcastle

A man has been charged after allegedly breaking into vehicles and stealing items from them in Merewether, NSW Police say.

About 2.30am today (Thursday 25 January 2018), residents in Rowan Crescent, Merewether, called police after detaining a 24-year-old on suspicion of stealing from vehicles.

Officers arrested the man and searched a vehicle which allegedly contained a large number of items believed to be stolen.

The man, who was on bail for other offences, was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with larceny and breach of bail.

He was bail refused to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

Officers are appealing to anyone who had their vehicle broken into recently to contact Newcastle Police Station.
