A man has been charged over an alleged stabbing at a home in Sydney's Inner West overnight.
About 1.20am today (Friday 7 August 2026), emergency services were called to a unit block on Illawarra Road, near Harnett Avenue, Marrickville, after reports of a stabbing.
On arrival, officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command found that a 61-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed several times in the torso by an unknown man.
Initial inquiries indicate the unknown person had allegedly broken into the home before stabbing the man and running from the scene.
The 61-year-old was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Police established a crime scene and officers from the Dog Unit assisted in a search of the nearby area; however, the unknown person could not be located.
Inner West detectives commenced Strike Force Mystix to investigate the incident.
As part of investigations, strike force detectives reattended the scene and while canvasing the area arrested a 34-year-old man on View Street, Marrickville, about 11am today.
He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with,
- Wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,
- Special aggravated break and enter & commit serious indictable offence,
- Possess prohibited drug, and
- Custody of knife in public place.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 7 tomorrow (Saturday 8 August 2026).
