Man Charged in Tweed Heads for Domestic Violence, Pursuit Offences

A man has been charged following a pursuit near Tweed Heads last night.

About 10.15pm (Monday 25 March 2024), police were called to a service station on Minjungbal Drive, Tweed Heads South, following reports a woman was being held against her will by a man known to her.

Police will allege that upon their arrival, the man fled the scene in a vehicle which was subsequently pursued by police.

A short time later, police from Tweed/Byron Police District terminated the pursuit due to the manner of driving; however, continued making inquiries into its location.

About 11.20pm, police located the vehicle on Amaroo Drive at Banora Point.

The man attempted to flee in the vehicle and allegedly rammed a police car; however, was arrested following a short struggle.

A 25-year-old woman in the vehicle was not injured; however, was taken to hospital for observation.

The 34-year-old man was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic), contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic), police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, and custody of knife in public place.

He was refused bail to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court today (Tuesday 26 March 2024), where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same court on Wednesday 15 May 2024.
