Man Charged Over $200,000 Fire Damage

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a series of fires in Lilydale last month.

Police and emergency services were called to ten separate bin, rubbish skips and spot fires across Lilydale between 8.45pm and 11.30pm on 19 June.

The estimated damage totalling more than $200,000.

Incidents include:

  • A chair was damaged in Marketplace shopping
  • A bin fire on Main Street
  • Three bin fires on Clarke Street
  • A bin fire on Hutchinson Street
  • Three industrial skip bins and a bin were set alight in Beresford Road
  • A skip bin at a medical centre in Berwick Street

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incidents however significant damage was caused to the medical centre.

On Wednesday 1 July, police arrested a 21-year-old man in Lilydale.

He has been charged with

  • Criminal damage by fire (x10)
  • Reckless conduct endangering life
  • Possess a drug of dependence
  • Resist police

The man, of no fixed address, has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 3 July.
