Man charged over 'cheque kiting' to the value of almost $20 million, NSW

Detectives have charged a man from the Hunter region following an investigation into cheque kiting, NSW Police say.

In March 2016, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial Crimes Squad established Strike Force Farrington to investigate allegations of fraudulent activities of a Hunter-based businessman.

Following extensive inquiries, a Future Court Attendance Notice for 98 counts of attempted fraud and one count of fraud was served on a 56-year-old man yesterday (Thursday 9 August 2018).

Police will allege the man was involved in a ‘cheque kiting’ scheme, where he deposited valueless cheques into an account and was able to draw down on uncleared funds, with a total value of $19,870,000.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 19 September 2018.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information in relation to fraudulent business schemes or financial malpractice is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
