Man charged over fraud- Trade Union Joint Police Task Force, NSW

Police have arrested a man in Sydney today in connection with a series of frauds regarding the state branch of a national union organisation, NSW Police say.

The Trade Union Joint Police Taskforce (TUTF), comprising officers from the NSW Police Force and Australian Federal Police, was established in January this year in response to the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption (TURC) that concluded in December.

Following extensive inquiries, Task Force detectives arrested a 44-year-old man in Surry Hills about 8.15am today.

Police will allege in court the man supplied IT services to the state union branch.

A number of the exchanges between the service provider and branch were later identified as being allegedly fraudulent transactions.

The man has now been charged with 10 fraud-related offences, participate in a criminal group, and receive material benefits derived from a criminal group.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to face Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 22 December 2016.

Police will allege the total value of the alleged fraud offences the man committed amounts to more than $220,000.

A 45-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were also charged last Thursday (17 November 2016), in connection with the same investigation. Their matters remain before the court.

Investigations under the Trade Union Joint Police Taskforce (TUTF) are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information about fraud-related offences to call Crime Stoppers.
