A man has been charged over an alleged armed bank robbery that occurred in Sydney CBD more than 30 years ago, NSW Police say.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Ashburner to investigate a series of armed robberies that occurred across Sydney in the 1980s.
On Friday 12 May 2017, strike force detectives arrested a 58-year-old man at Sydney Airport, after he was deported from the United Kingdom.
He was charged with various offences and remains before the court.
Following further inquiries, strike force detectives attended a correctional facility at Wellington just after 9am today (Monday 2 July 2018), and charged the now 59-year-old man with robbery whilst armed.
Police will allege in court the man, who was armed with a handgun, robbed a bank on Pitt Street, Sydney, on Friday 16 May 1986. He fled the scene with a sum of cash.
He is expected to appear via AVL at Dubbo Local Court later today.
