Man charged over large-scale grocery theft in Banksia

A man will face court today charged over the alleged large-scale theft of grocery items from across Sydney, NSW Police say.

Earlier this month, officers from Redfern Region Enforcement Squad conducted Operation Lightfingers targeting shoplifting offences throughout a number of major retail outlets across Sydney CBD, Broadway, Redfern and Bondi Junction.

Following inquiries into the large-scale theft of food items, officers executed a search warrant at a grocery store on Railway Parade, Banksia, about 12pm yesterday (Thursday 20 Thursday 2018).

A 48-year-old man was arrested and taken to St George Police Station.

During a search of the store, police located and seized 123 cartons of red bull, 113 cartons of Nescafe coffee, 162 cartons of tuna, 32 cartoons of Moccona coffee, 100 cartons of assorted chocolate brands, and other items.

Police will allege the items were stolen from major supermarkets in Clemton Park, Miranda, Earlwood, Ashfield, and Rhodes.

The man, from Kyeemagh, was charged with seven counts of shoplifting, and seven counts of receive/dispose stolen property.

He has been refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Friday 21 December 2018).

Inquiries continue.
