Man charged over Wollongong carjackings, armed robbery

A man will face court today after another man was allegedly robbed with a knife and two cars carjacked in Wollongong yesterday.

About 3am Wednesday, a 20-year-old man returned to his parked Toyota Camry on Belmore Street and fell asleep in the back seat.

The man was woken a short time later when he found another man in the front passenger seat, allegedly rummaging through the vehicle.

The man then allegedly produced a knife and threatened the 20-year-old in the back seat.

The 20-year-old was forced to hand over his wallet and drive the man to three nearby ATM’s to withdraw cash.

The man then took his car keys and drove away in the Toyota.

The 20-year-old then reported the matter to Wollongong Police who commenced investigations.

About 6pm, the 20-year-old allegedly received a phone call from the man who claimed he would return the vehicle and other property taken in exchange for an amount of cash. The 20-year-old was told to meet the man in the Wollongong CBD.

The 20-year-old reported the phone call to Wollongong Police who immediately commenced patrols for the Toyota Camry.

About 6.45pm, officers sighted the Toyota Camry in Stewart Street and followed the vehicle to a nearby car park.

A man in the front passenger seat allegedly ran from the Toyota and got into a car stopped in nearby Corrimal Street. He allegedly demanded the female driver to drive him away, but she ran from the car.

Officers arrested a 29-year-old man at the scene and took him to Wollongong Police Station.

He was charged with carjacking (x2), detain for advantage, robbery armed with an offensive weapon and outstanding warrants.

The man was refused bail to appear before Port Kembla Local Court today.

A 27-year-old man driving the Toyota Camry was also arrested at the scene and is currently assisting police with inquiries.
