Man charged with 1980s robberies - Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, NSW

A man will appear in court today in relation to a number of armed robberies in Sydney, some occurring almost 35 years ago, NSW Police say.

Strike Force Ashburner, comprising detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad are investigating a number of armed robberies that occurred across Sydney in the early to mid-1980s.

yesterday, a 58-year-old man was deported from the United Kingdom to Australia.

He was arrested by strike force detectives on his return to Sydney and charged with a number of offences relating to armed robberies in Sydney during the early to mid-1980s

The offences relate to the following incidents

1. Robbery – Service Station, St Peters, 12 August 1982

2. Robbery - Betting agency, Summer Hill, 14 August 1982

3. Robbery Whilst Armed, Government department, Glebe 22 January 1986

4. Robbery Whilst Armed, Bank Chatswood 21 February 1986

5. Robbery Whilst Armed, Financial institution, Carringbah, 27 February 1986

6. Attempt Robbery Whilst Armed - Supermarket Drummoyne 17 April 1986

7. Robbery Whilst Armed – Bank, Chippendale, 6 May 1986

8. Robbery Whilst Armed - Financial institution, Bankstown, 21 July 1986

9. Robbery Whilst Armed – Bank, Strathfield 15 January 1997

The man was also charged with escaping lawful custody while at court in 1983 and 1986.

He has been bail refused and will appear by video link at Parramatta Bail Court today
