Man charged with attempted murder of homeless man, NSW

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a homeless man was seriously assaulted in Sydney’s Hyde Park early this morning, NSW Police say.

About 5am today, a 38-year-old man was sleeping on a bench in Hyde Park.

Police will allege a 52-year-old man approached the homeless man and hit him in the face with a glass bottle, causing a serious wound to his nose.

The man then allegedly raised a small shopping trolley over his head and him repeatedly until a passerby intervened, protecting the man with his bike.

Officers from Sydney City Local Area Command attended a short time later and arrested the older man.

Police do not believe the two men were known to each other prior to the incident.

The injured man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with serious injuries, including bleeding on the lungs and brain. He is currently in a stable condition.

The arrested man was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

He was refused bail, to appear before Central Local Court tomorrow.
